Rajamudi rice is a traditional red rice variety from the region around Mysuru and Srirangapatna in Karnataka.

It has a rich cultural and historical legacy linked to the old Mysore kingdom. The name Rajamudi comes from “Raja” (king) and “Mudi” (crown), meaning “the king’s rice”. It was traditionally reserved for the royal family and palace kitchens of Mysore.

Rajamudi has been cultivated in southern Karnataka for over 300–400 years, especially along the Cauvery river basin.

It was grown using natural, rain-fed and river-fed methods, without chemical inputs, making it part of India’s indigenous and sustainable farming heritage.
